To The World 04:28
Dear cousin John whose spirit rejoiced as the miracle baby he praised without voice because he knew Valleys sat up as the mountains lay down and the Hope of the World then arrived from a town so few knew Sharon's sweet rose just from the womb Judah's Great Lion now soft as a lamb but those there knew Peace unlike ours justice and love The King of all kings he'd come down from above because he knew Heaven's star shone calling the wise as the Morning Star slept there they had hope in their eyes because they knew Healer of all held in her arms Emmanuel there to undo the harms old and new

As late autumn leaves drift from their richness to fill every street with their temporal likeness I sense my smallness in these moments of closure caught in the winds of the oncoming weather I could be contented to stay here forever alive in the songs of the season of winter together As innocence leaves I'm faced with my choices our family keeps it's trust in the voices Of priests and of prophets and signs of the Savior our sense of belonging and reason for laughter through feast and through famine a glass to remember old celebrations and all that we hoped for together Though happiness leaves such a sunset emotion like the slyest of thieves it preys on my notion Of joy and of courage like a wick to a fire both fall to ashes and take my desire to rekindle passions like a breath to an ember our glowing faces beholden and warmer together Everyone leaves in shadow and sorrow the world's soft release of souls and tomorrows 'Cause no one can keep all that they've borrowed together

You were beautiful like a river that winds its way through timber gold in the sunset’s fire what a show I was worn like your favorite sweater you’ve pull out each gray November since the year we fell for each other what a fall When I became alive like a cardinal on white the glisten of moonlight on blanketed night the` e-lectric glow of streetlamps on snow as we held each other home You were fresh like a Midwest apple pulled from the branch by a child sweet and refreshingly mild what a find I was tired like the aging maple that gives up its gold until April you must’ve thought me such a fool what a smile

Everybody likes to take a holiday Everybody likes to take a rest Spending time together with the family Sharing lots of love and happiness. Come on, ring those bells, Light the Christmas tree, Jesus is the king Born for you and me. Come on, ring those bells, Every-body say, Jesus, we remember [It's] your birthday. Celebrations come because of something good. Celebrations we love to recall Mary had a baby boy in Bethleham The greatest celebration of all.

about

The three original tracks on this EP began a couple years ago as an effort to write “holiday” songs that explored a few of the many facets of the busy weeks that span from Thanksgiving to New Year’s (hence the title). In content, track one is creatively historical, and the middle two tracks are fairly autobiographical; however, my hope is that the emotions and motifs, if not the experiences themselves, might resonate with you as versions of something familiar and true.

If I had to get at the heart of the original tracks, they would best be explained as follows: “To the World” celebrates a flame of hope, “None Can Keep” wrestles with nostalgia and loss, and “Each Other: Home” recalls romantic love. The fourth song, my cover of Evie’s, “Come On, Ring Those Bells,” (from her 1977 Grammy-nominated album by the same name) rounds out the EP with a sense of jubilation. Thus, the emotional ebb and flow that I often experience during this annual whirlwind of weeks, takes on these essential, and at times contradicting, feelings: wonder, grief, love and joy.

Certainly, “the most wonderful time of the year” isn’t so for many people. Indeed, some of you who will take the time to listen to these tracks over the coming weeks—let alone read these ramblings—will be experiencing a new version of this season: one without the presence of a loving daughter, sister, friend. To you, as to all (myself included), I say: embrace each emotion in turn; allow for internal conversations and contemplation; mourn the losses, celebrate the victories, and make peace with everything in between. And finally, welcome the chance to experience new life in the year ahead.

Thank you for listening.
