My life, in part, is branded
by harp & cross & ring
by the darkness of the Troubles
& the calling of the sea
Though the marshes of my homeland
are not her moors of green
I belong, in part, to Erin
& she belongs to me
Ireland the world adores you
there's a magic in your roots
in your luck & dance & fightin'
in your mysteries & truth
So let's raise a glass to Patrick
Brigid & Brendan too
to the saints who shaped a nation
& to Christ who saw them through
Here's to Swift & Yeats & Lewis
the wordsmiths of the isle
seeking justice, beauty, wisdom
with an ancient Irish guile
But as pretty as I imagine
the Emerald Isle to be
as beautiful the country
I someday hope to see
She's a shadow of my true home
where the final doorway leads
where I'll sing an ageless chorus
to the one & only King
Stolen away from Britain ‘cross the Eastern Sea
made to be a shepherd, met with suffering
stripped of all his comforts just before sixteen
then the Rock of Ages whispered in his dreams
Laborin’ as a farmhand, he began to know,
hidden in the belly of a beast, just how
all that he’d rejected as a Roman lad
was the only Savior he would ever have
In a pair of visions that he knew were true
time had come for freedom from this servitude
thus, he managed rivers & the mountains Slieve
finally to board a ship that was stayed to save
Like the wanderin’ Hebrews in the desert’s heat
they went near a month upon the foam & deep
there, what had sustained him through his darkest days,
held him like a Father as they made their way
Even as he settled back at home again
Victoricus dropped letters by the freed man’s bed
“The Voice o’ the Irish” was the letters’ name
thus, compelled, he knew he must return to them
“Holy Boy” they mocked him, still he spoke in love
brought the Gospel’s goodness to the land of Lugh
through his patient practice, Erin came to see
that the Sun of Righteousness arose to free

Here’s my humble contribution to the vast collection of Irish songs that folks usually play once-a-year during St. Patrick's Day—the day we use as our excuse to pinch people who forget to wear green, claim a distant Irish relative, pretend to like Guinness & share a pair of small ones. Admittedly, I enjoy “the black stuff” & green happens to be a good color on me; but I have always disliked the idea that the holiday most popularly associated with a part of my heritage is tied to such strange & foolhardy traditions (e.g. green beer). Thus, after some pondering & tinkering, I did what any quasi-Irishman would do—I wrote a song about it! Or two, to be exact. The first is a tribute to the Emerald Isle & the many people & things—great & notorious—that came from her shores; the second is a musical rendition of Patrick’s life, for which I relied on Philip Freeman’s highly informative & entertaining book St. Patrick of Ireland: A Biography. Sláinte!
